Scotland's Genealogy - a new blog.

We find no vestige of a beginning,no prospect of an end.

James Hutton 1795

Welcome to 'Scotland's Genealogy' a new blog by Chris Halliday, amateur genealogist and enthusiast of Scotland's history.

New to blogging ,this will be a steep learning curve, but there is no time like the present so be patient.

Why 'Scotland's Genealogy' ? Well all the obvious domain names have gone; Scottish, Scots, as the popularity of Scottish genealogy increases. Will there soon be too many professional genealogists competing for business?

I look forward to hearing your comments and lets see where this will go.

  2. Hello All,
I have been told my family name, Espy( also spelled Espey, Espie) were a border family in Scotland (the earliest is a George Espy, born 1623 in Midlothian,Scotland married Nancy Patton also born in Midlothian, Scotland) and were signer's of the "Solemn League of Covenant" thus sent to Ireland in the 17th century to work on the "plantations" I have never been able to connect my surname with a clan. My family immigrated from Ireland to America in the 18th century and settled first in Pennsylvania where there is still a town by the name of Espy.

  3. Hi Anonymous
I did a little digging yesterday into the name Espie and from the map distribution it is certainly most common in Dumfries and Galloway and could be from the place name Esbie,a farm near Lochmaben in Dumfriesshire.Look at www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk for map at different times.
Also looked at old marriage records in Edinburgh and found one.
Barbara Esbie servitrix to James Munro, wryttar in Edinburgh married John Carson weaver proclaimed 22 Dec 1696 married 15 Jan 1697.
It does not have a tartan as only Highland clans in Scotland wore the kilt. There are more modern tartans which have been designed for Lowland names but none for Espie.
